MUSIQUE CONCRÈTE

The idea is simple: hook up the whole neighbourhood and make it play one piece of music full-blast into the heartless night. By neighbourhood I mean all four tower blocks, these grey, birdshit-flecked monuments to isolation.

What if you could hijack all the Wi-Fi connections behind all those little windows and use them to create a symphony of this four-cornered square, a digital rhapsody of these streets?

If you’re reading this it’s because I’ve taken over your computer or mobile (or tablet if you’re a flash git) and this text has been dominating your screen for the past minute or so. Sorry about that. It’s all in good faith.

I bet you haven’t noticed the microphones I’ve placed at various points around the estate. Our estate. This place isn’t just about your little flat you know. It’s about the pigeons, the car alarms, the breeze through the treetops, traffic on the flyover, laughter from an open window, the rattle of an overground train.

I’m recording all this audio loveliness right now, mixing it all up and putting the whole thing on a loop. There’s just one thing missing: you. When it starts playing in your hand, on your desk, on your lap, you will say something, you might laugh, shout, maybe just freeze in disbelief.

Whatever you do, I’ll be recording that too, feeding it into the mix, letting it grow and grow as it comes out of your speakers and the ones I’ve hidden on the landings and in the alleyways. You’ll be an instrument just like everything else in this little patch of postcode.

Didn’t know you could play music, did you?

Right, here goes. You ready? You sure? OK, let’s do it… this is the ultimate in community radio coming to you live, live, live. Here it comes… turn off the telly… here it comes… put down that magazine… we’re coming to you in 4, 3, 2, 1…

Beautiful, isn’t it?

I’m Danny by the way. Tower 3, Flat 87. Hello.
